Relocating to the Mountains!

French Broad River

After years of dreaming about living in the mountains it is finally a reality. Glenda and I took the plunge and left the flat lands of Texas for the beauty of Asheville, North Carolina.

We arrived here less than 2 weeks ago and we have been busy settling into our new home ever since. There hasn’t yet been any time to get out and explore the vast mountains, but that is why I am here, and as soon as I get an opportunity I will be out there.

Asheville is a picturesque mountain town that sits in one of the most beautiful areas on planet earth. We feel blessed to be able to live in this wonderful area and we intend to make the most of it.

We want to learn how to kayak along the many rivers here, and of course we want to hike and camp as often as possible. Because I am retired I aim to get out there frequently and explore the thousands of trails and beauty spots in and around the Carolinas/Tennessee area as much as conditions (including my own) allow.

By moving here in January we get to see the mountains change through all four seasons. It is absolutely gorgeous in the middle of winter, so I am excited to see what it is like in the spring time when the flowers bloom and the landscape explodes into life. The fall will be especially beautiful and I can’t wait to see it.

Because I am now living in and around the mountains and will be getting out frequently I am restarting my blog that I have patently neglected over the last several months. I will be updating it a lot more often and adding content to it as I go along.

There are so many great trails and hikes here that I could hike every day for the rest of my life and never get close to seeing them all. After getting myself into good hiking shape I aim to do the Foothills Trail which is a 77 mile trail traversing through both South and North Carolina and is one of the most picturesque trails I have ever heard about.

Of course the big daddy around here is the Appalachian Trail, and I fully intend to section hike that from beginning to end. It may take me the remainder of my life but it is a lifelong dream of mine to walk the AT, and I will complete it before I am done.

A new camera is high on my wish list this year so I can take better pictures and video that will hopefully do justice to the areas that I hike in, and I will post the better ones on this blog.

2014 is the start of an amazing journey for both of us, and we can’t wait to get out there and enjoy it!!
